The purpose of this section is to provide you with the knowledge of both the requirements as well as the time frames once you have passed the exam and been issued your California notary commission.

Upon completion of this section, you will be able to describe:
(1) Completion of Oath time limits
(2) Bonding Requirements
(3) Which County to file your bond
(4) When your commission takes effect
(5) What will happen if you do not file your Oath and bond within the time limit
(6) Whether or not you can mail your Oath

Time Limits

Once you have successfully passed both the Secretary of State exam as well as the background check, you will automatically be mailed an oath as well as a notary commission. You do not need to contact the Secretary of State for information regarding obtaining an oath or notary commission:

Time limit for filing your Oath and Bond:

1.  Once your commission has been issued, you have 30 calendar days to take, subscribe, and file an OATH of office and file an OFFICIAL BOND in the amount of $15,000.00.  You can purchase your bond through various admitted surety insurers. (*deposits in lieu of bonds are not accepted.)

 Of course, you can purchase your bond by visiting us on the web at http://www.uprisers.com/notary.html. You will need to bring your bond with you when you go to the county clerk’s office.  The County Recorder, after recording the bond, will return the original to you later. 

1.  Because you will need to give the County clerk’s Office your original bond, you should make a copy of your bond so that you will have a copy for yourself until your original is returned to you.

 2.  The State of California requires that your bond be in the amount of $15,000.00.   

3.  You must file both your Oath and Bond at the County Clerk’s Office in the county where you maintain a principal place of business as shown in the application on file with the Secretary of State.
