Although you filled out an application and stated the County of your principal place of business, California notaries are not restricted to performing notarial acts only in the county in which named as your principal place of business.  In fact, as a notary public for the State of California, you can practice your services throughout the State of California.  (Section 8200) (KS11-GC8200)

Fact:  There are 58 counties in California.  As a California notary public, you can notarize documents in all of the counties in California.  For a list of counties, please see pages 28 and 33.

When you fill-out your acknowledgment or Jurat, you will need to indicate what county you are in when you perform your notarial act.  It does not matter if the document came from Europe or Texas, you will need to include in the county that you are in when you perform your notary act.  The county that you are in is called the Venue.  See below for an example of a venue heading. ”Yolo” is the venue.

Example of a venue heading:

State of {California}
County of {Yolo}
               Venue

Let’s say that you were in Sacramento County when you notarized a document that came from Washoe County in Nevada;  When you fill-out the venue portion of the venue heading, you will write “Sacramento” as the venue- not Washoe.
